Warnings for nuisance off-road bikers

As daylight hours get longer and the weather improves the police receive a significant amount of calls from local people relating to the nuisance and annoyance that mini-motos and other illegal motorcycles cause.

Inspector Sue Mills explained "The bikes are noisy and dangerous and more often than not we find that they are unlikely to be insured. Riders often take to their bikes without wearing a helmet too and the dangers of this are obvious."

Last month the Police issued 4 section 59 warnings to offending riders and their vehicles in the Lacey Green area. If the rider or vehicle is seen again the police can then seize and destroy the vehicle to prevent it being ridden again anti socially.

Inspector Mills added "We will continue to give this problem attention.

"If you see any vehicles being used in an anti social manner then please call us on 101 to report this so that we can take action."

It would be good if the police also did something about the adults who ride ordinary cycles on the pavement - particularly on Grove Street.

Have the police suggested suitable locations where these off-road motorcycles can be ridden?

Why not take a temporary significant fine at the first offence? Bank it and if the offending rider or bike is not seen reoffending in a given period of time, return the fine. Might make these folk think twice when their pocket is hit immediately.

Illegal motorbikes. That's a new one. Presumably meant the illegal use on the public highway. If we are moaning about the noise of motors and engines we could start with the keen gardeners on Sunday mornings and late evenings. Much more of a pest!
