Cheshire East Council has confirmed that a pavement parking ban is still being considered but it is awaiting guidance from the Government

During the public speaking section of the Highways and Transport Committee meeting on Thursday, 19th June, Mrs V Scaresbrook Congleton Sustainable Travel, asked "Since most pavements are in a hazardous condition for all, whether waklking or wheeling, are comprehensive pavement repairs proposed and is a pavement parking ban also proposed to reduce damage and restore safe space for users?"

Richard Hibbert, Head of Strategic Transport & Parking Services responded "A pavement parking ban is still to be considered but it is signalled by the Secretary of State for Transport but there is to be a national piece of guidance published, potentially accompanying the national transport strategy, in response to a consultation that the FT ran some considerable time ago now and it is clearly prudent for the council to await that national position for we decide how to proceed."

Councillor Mark Goldsmith said "Cheshire East Council is the leading in the patrol group, which is the group of councils outside of London that meet to discuss parking and the management of our roads and enforcement of our roads and it is something that we have been asking for for almost a decade. They have those powers of pavement in London but not outsdie of London and we would like them but the government has maybe kicked it into the long grass previously so we are hoping that more will come."

He added "I totally get your sentiment about pavements, yes we would love to improve them more but the £800,000 we have is not going to go very far on the pavements it owuld very veryquickl;y be swallowed up."

Of course there should be a ban on parking on pavements. It’s thoughtless and lazy and causes real problems to many people who encounter it. Deliveries, OK. Why are drivers so inconsiderate of pedestrians but either more considerate of other drivers or, more probably, don’t want their vehicles scratched.
I’m both a driver and a pedestrian, as are many people, but we give too little priority to pedestrians, cyclists and others. The car is king, and it shouldn’t be.
Ten years after introducing the ban everyone will wonder why it wadn’t done sooner.

Quite right - parking on pavements should be outlawed. I know that a certain ex-councillor has blamed the current WTC for failing in every respect, however, one thing that they have certainly done is solve the parking on Cliff Road which the previous council did nothing about.

Richard.

The last WTC did try to do something. It bought some new planters and located them on the pavement on Cliff Road. However, the planters were then vandalised on more than one occasion and were then relocated to the town centre.

But I do understand your comment about a certain ex-councillor who has blamed the current WTC for failing in every respect, It makes me laugh how liberal they are with the truth. Their antics remind me of a certain former Conservative Prime Minister who was also liberal with the truth.

And talking of Truth, I ignore both GB News, "Truth Social", all party political broadcasts and most national news papers.

This is a problem caused in part by the council, who like to grant planning permission on the pretense that private homes only have one car and commercial premises will only be occupied by cycling enthusiasts.
