Junior hockey grows in confidence

Wilmslow Hockey Juniors enjoyed the end to the hockey freeze by taking part in the U15 Greater Manchester Junior Hockey League held in Bellevue on Sunday 3rd Feb.

The bad weather has cancelled the majority of post-Christmas training, with training finally resuming the first week of February.

Wilmslow have U15 girls and boys teams who play regularly in this tournament. Many of the juniors aged 14 and upwards are integrated into the weekly senior teams so this tournament offers important experience to the younger Wilmslow players to have and enjoy some match practice.

The teams are made up of students from year 7 to year 9. There were 4 teams in the girls tournament, with Wilmslow playing against Alderley Edge, Brooklands Poynton and Bury Jaguars.

In the boys tournament there were 6 teams, Bury Jaguars, Stockport, Tameside Hawks, Timperley, Urmston and Wilmslow.

The girls battled on without a goalkeeper but lost all 3 matches: Alderley Edge 12 - Wilmslow 0;Brooklands Poynton 6 Wilmslow 0; Bury Jaguars 2 - Wilmslow 0.

The boys played 5 games, winning only 1. The results were: Wilmslow 0 - Bury 2; Wilmslow 1 – Urmston 3; Wilmslow 3 – Thameside 2; Wilmslow 1 – Stockport 3; Wilmslow 0 – Timperley 3.

Although results didn’t go their way this week, everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed their hockey. Many thanks to Louise Broome and Keith Winterbourne who managed the girls and boys team respectively. Thanks also to the parents who helped out on the day. The next tournament is on February 24th in Bellevue.
