Residents are delighted that plans to install a telephone mast at Davenport Green have been refused.

Outraged neighbours came together to fight plans to erect a 15 metre replica telegraph pole off the verge on Knutsford Road, opposite Church Road, and sought the support of Cllr Gary Barton.

The planning application was submitted by Mono Consultants, on behalf of Vodafone, for a mobile mast to be shared by Vodafone and Telefonica - to provide them both with improved 3G network coverage to the Davenport Green area of Wilmslow.

Danielle Thompson, of Upcast Lane, lives opposite the site and was very upset about the proposal.

She told wilmslow.co.uk "We are all absolutely delighted with the decision to reject the proposed phone mast as it just shows that we can protect our heritage against such an eyesore! It took a lot of hard work though but gives other people hope that they can affect decisions!"

Speaking about why she felt the mast was inappropriate, Danielle said "Davenport Green is the cornerstone of the area, housing old road signs and historical stones and surrounded by particularly attractive and individual 1850's properties which have been lovingly and sympathetically preserved.

"It is a highly attractive and much sought after residential area, predominantly because of its heritage and beauty and residents consider it a privilege to live here because of its unique and beautiful character. Great care is taken to preserve the look and feel of the area (which is treated as a conservation area) - we plant bulbs every year to make our Green look even more beautiful."

Cheshire East Council refused the application on the grounds that the proposed telecommunications equipment, by reason of its size, siting and design would be visually obtrusive, add to the existing proliferation of street furniture in the immediate vicinity of the site and detract from the character and appearance of the area.

Additionally, it was felt that there are potential alternative sites in the area where the equipment could be located without the same degree of visual harm.
