After seven barren, weather plagued weeks, it was back to competitive action for Wilmslow Town FC at all age groups last weekend. Results were mixed and, with some teams playing in cup fixtures, it was especially disappointing to see six sides lose by the odd goal in some high scoring fixtures.
Two of Town’s U10 sides went out of their respective league cup quarter finals after losing 4-3. The U10 Cougars fell to Timperley Villa, despite two goals from Watts and one from Bennett, while Cvetkovic, Lowe and Colledge scored as the U10 Jaguars shared seven goals with AFC Partington Dragons. The U10 Panthers fared no better in League Division 1, losing 3-0 to Wythenshawe Amateurs.
At U12, the Panthers failed to overturn a 1-0 half-time deficit in their top of the table clash with Stockport Eagles, 2-3 the final result with goals from Murphy and Short. The U12 Cougars were in cup action against league leaders Oswald Road and put up a brave fight before eventually going down 2-5.
The U18s also came out on the wrong end of a 4-3 score line – King, Slater and Traynor scored for Wilmslow in a close encounter with Breaks 147 FC. The U13s entertained Beechfield United, a team seven places above them in the league. Despite the apparent gulf between the two teams, Wilmslow acquitted themselves well with Clark scoring and Hill winning man of the match in a narrow 1-2 defeat.
There was more success for the all conquering U15s as they reached double figures against Swinton to maintain their 100% league record after eight games. Johnson, Perry, Stanyer, Gardener, Storey and Whatson all got on the score sheet and Swindells celebrated a hat trick in a resounding 10-2 win. The U16s also maintained their table top status with a hard fought 2-1 victory over nearest rivals Aston on Mersey. Man of the match Judge scored for Wilmslow and an Ashton own goal secured the three points.
The U14s travelled to Chorlton to take on Oswald Road with the two teams tied on 16 points in 2nd and 3rd place in League Division 1. The sides were predictably well matched and fought out an exciting 3-3 score draw.
There were mixed fortunes for the U11s. The Panthers continued their good run of form as they revisited Aston on Mersey to start their cup campaign and came away 6-1 winners. Goals for Batra, Nield, Sach, Wheeler and two from man of the match Boyd were more than enough to take the Panthers through to the next round. The U11 Cougars were defeated by Wythenshawe Town.
There was more seven goal sorrow for Wilmslow in U9 Division 1. Two goals from Archer and one from Ford pushed Urmston Meadowside Saxons to the wire, but were not enough as the U9 Cougars lost 4-3. The Cougars’ keeper Stone was awarded man of the match.
In the same division, the recently promoted U9 Jaguars showed great promise and fighting spirit in their 3-1 defeat to high-flying Unicorn Vikings. Williams scored the Jaguars’ only goal while Vitale was man of the match. The U9 Panthers, also recently promoted, twice lead in their Division 2 away fixture against Fletcher Moss only to be pegged back in the dying minutes for a 2-2 draw. Fleming was the manager’s choice for man of the match as Larbalestier and Rycroft found the back of the net.
