Transition Wilmslow have received a Wilmslow Town Council Green Community Fund award of £540 to cover the costs of excavation for a pond at Land Lane Allotments.
Transition Wilmslow are a registered charity that works together on climate change, biodiversity and health & wellbeing initiatives in Wilmslow and the surrounding area.
At their allotment plot, they aim to grow edible plants in a way that is sustainable and spread the knowledge within the local community, to encourage use of a wider variety of edible plants and to garden in a way that supports increased biodiversity.
The grant from the Green Community Fund will be used to clear and shape an area on the Land Lane Allotment site, located off Prestbury Road – close to Wilmslow High School – where Transition Wilmslow are tenants.
The work will enable the creation of a wildlife pond, which has the potential to produce a zone of higher biodiversity by providing a link in the chain of ponds across the area, helping to develop a 'wildlife corridor' of ponds.
Wilmslow Town Mayor, Councillor Tim Higgins, said, "We are proud to support Transition Wilmslow's project at Land Lane Allotments.
"Our Green Community Fund was established to help projects that promote sustainable spaces, biodiversity conservation and 'greening' the town, through actions such as the creation of wildlife habitats and open-water features. Transition Wilmslow's project very much fits this aim.
"We wish Transition Wilmslow success with their project and thank the volunteers for their hard work."
