Wilmslow Town Council elects new mayor

At the annual town council meeting on Monday 20th May, Councillor Tim Higgins was elected the new town mayor to replace outgoing town mayor, Councillor Jon Newell.

Jon Newell was elected chair of Wilmslow Town Council for the council year commencing in May 2023 and assumed the role of town mayor when they took the decision to change the title in February of this year.

Having concluded his mayoral year, Jon Newell said, "I will be continuing as a Councillor – representing Dean Row ward – and fully expect to be playing a full role throughout the coming years. I wish Tim every success in the future."

Councillor Jon Kelly, who became vice chair of the town council in May 2023 then assumed the role of deputy town mayor when the title was changed, has been re-elected as deputy town mayor.

New town mayor, Councillor Tim Higgins, said, "I would like to start by thanking the Town Councillors for electing me as the new Wilmslow Town Mayor.

"I want to thank the outgoing Mayor, Jon Newell, for his service, guidance and support to the new Council over the last year."

"Likewise, I want to add thanks to the Deputy Mayor, Jon Kelly, who has supported the Mayor; I am delighted that he has been re-elected as the Deputy Mayor for this year.

"I want to recognise the support we receive from the Town Council team that is Matthew Jackson, Town Clerk, Helen Richards, Assistant Town Clerk, and Sophie Taylor, Communications and Community Engagement Officer. Their work supports us as Councillors in achieving our aims and we are grateful for that.

"I look forward to working with all Councillors and the Town Council Team in supporting us achieve our aims of having a community with a vibrant town centre and one which preserves the unique and diverse countryside in and around the town."

Is it just me or has the Town Council got significantly younger over the past year or so? Hopefully some more forward thinking ideas to come - loved reading about the celebration of community contributors!
