Pupils from Alderley Edge School for Girls have been teaching over 10 different languages to children in local primary schools as part of a Language Leaders Programme.

In September 2021, Alderley Edge School for Girls launched the Language Leader Award for pupils in the Senior School who have a love of languages and would love to share a second or even third language with other pupils and the wider community.

Since its launch, pupils have taught 12 different languages to local primary school pupils including Farsi, Swedish, Arabic, Cantonese and Japanese. The schools they have been teaching at include Wilmslow Prep, Nether Alderley Primary School, Alderley Edge Community Primary School, Greenbank Preparatory School and Peover Superior Primary School.

The schools have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming AESG pupils into their schools and extending their pupils' language knowledge as well as takin g part in many enjoyable cultural activities.

Miss Crumbleholme, Assistant Head at Peover Superior Primary School, said: "I was absolutely blown away with the girls' knowledge and their confidence. They did the school and themselves exceptionally proud and the children are still talking about it today!"

The Language Leader Award enables pupils to share languages and helps pupils learn to lead, using language teaching as the medium. Throughout the year-long programme pupils develop their leadership skills and grow in confidence as they teach their chosen language to Primary School pupils.

Headmistress at Alderley Edge School for Girls, Mrs Nicola Smillie, added: "We are thrilled to be able to provide the opportunity for our pupils to be part of the Language Leaders Award. The skills they will learn, such as providing a purpose and context for their language skills, enhancing their self-esteem and confidence and giving them a better understanding of themselves as learners will significantly set them apart with their skills and personal development portfolio."

The Language Leaders at Alderley Edge School for Girls meet every Friday lunchtime to discuss new activities, plan lessons and create resources for local primary schools or just think about how they can improve the awareness of foreign languages in the local community.
