Wilmslow gets into the festive spirit

The annual Christmas light switch-on event was once again very well attended with families young and old lining the route of the reindeer parade and enjoying the Artisan Market on Saturday, 16th November.

Despite the early afternoon rain which threatened to put off all but the most enthusiastic, families emerged from the warmth of the shops to watch Santa and his two prize winning passengers Leo and James - pupils at Ashdene Primary School - being transported through the town in the reindeer sleigh.

The stage in Bank Square welcomed local entertainers Destiny Choir, Stagecoach School of Performing Arts, St Annes Fulhaw School Choir and the Choir of Wilmslow Academy. Whilst Erik Garner coordinated the stage performers and interviewed local people who are actively contributing to supporting those in our community over the festive season.

The lights were switched on by local resident Yvette Royle who has initiated and is coordinating a Wilmslow Pensioners Christmas Day Lunch to combat loneliness amongst our community's elderly population and has already recruited nearly 80 local volunteers. Erik was also joined by Caroline Kelf a local mum who is coordinating a Christmas collection for the homeless.

Yvette was joined by Santa and the competition winners in counting down and pressing the plunger to turn on the lights and mark the countdown to Christmas.

The event was organised and funded by Wilmslow Town Council which has also invested further in the lighting for 2019 by undertaking repairs to the tree lights in the town, extending the motifs further along Alderley Road and introducing lighting to Chapel Lane.

Martin Watkins ' Chairman Wilmslow Town Council' said "With the additional investment in the Christmas Lights this year I was delighted see so many people enjoying the event on Saturday and seeing so many businesses clearly benefitting from the additional footfall created. I hope that residents will join me in supporting the local town businesses over the Christmas period helping to do all we can to ensure a vibrant and successful town centre."

Denise Valente of The Market Co. said "'A huge thank you to the folks of Wilmslow for supporting our awesome artisans at Wilmslow Artisan Market on Saturday.

"We hope you all had a lovely day and enjoyed the reindeer and lights switch on."

Next month the full on Christmas Artisan Market will take place on Saturday 21st December.
