The 7th Wilmslow Brownies, who meet in the Methodist Church off Water Lane, have been celebrating 50 years in Girlguiding.
Records show that the unit was formed on 17th February 1966 and the current members have marked the occasion in a number of ways. They started with a party during a Tuesday night meeting, to which they invited all previous leaders and helpers they could get hold of.
Fourteen guests attended and they were treated to a performance of previous and current songs, delivered by Brownies dressed in uniforms from 'through the ages'. Additionally, five girls took the opportunity to complete their Hostess badge by preparing the room, welcoming the guests, providing and serving refreshments, and clearing up afterwards.
The celebrations continued at the community Church Parade service in the Methodist Church last weekend, where the girls again demonstrated how 'Being a Brownie' has changed over the past 50 years. Many members of the congregation enjoyed going down 'memory lane', and browsing the old photographs and newspaper clippings on display.
Trudi Stephenson, Snowy Owl, said "The unit learned so much about their history that they all took the opportunity to work on their Brownie Traditions badge. They were visited by Ann Harris and Jean Lunt, the County Archivists, who supplied the old uniforms and had boxes of memorabilia from Brownie guiding over the years.
"The girls particularly liked the dolls dressed in the old uniforms, and in uniforms from different countries. They also enjoyed hearing about what girls used to have to carry with them at all times (string, money for phone...) and reading about what they used to have to do in the old handbooks."
