Wilmslow Library will be hosting an event this weekend for anyone interested in local and family history.

The third annual Local History Fair is being held to coincide with Local History Month and will take over both of the upstairs rooms at the library on Saturday morning, 18th May.

Alison McCready explained "We invite local history groups to display their publications and latest projects in the reference library, chat to visitors, help with research and recruit members if they wish.

"We use the reference library because this is where we house our local history collection, including books, maps, photographs, microfilms of old newspapers and the Romany collection so it gives us a chance to promote our resources as well."

Groups taking part this year include the Alderley History Group, Wilmslow Historical Society, Cheshire Gardens Trust, The Romany Society and Wilmslow Community Archaeology.

At 10.30am local historian Ray Acton will be giving an illustrated talk about his book 'Victorian Wilmslow' which is raising funds for the charity 'Fight for Sight' - which provides vital funding for research at hospital and university levels into the many causes of blindness.

The book, which is presented in three volumes, has been extensively researched and give a fascinating insight into how much the town was developed and transformed by the advent of the railway and the subsequent arrival of the Manchester businessmen who settled here.

Refreshments will be provided and free tickets are available from Wilmslow Library on 01625 374060.
