People stuck in multi storey car park lift

Two people needed the help of firefighters after getting stuck in a lift off Water Lane this morning.

The crew from Wilmslow Fire Station released the pair from the lift on the ground floor of the multi storey car park at 11.16am, having been called to the incident thirteen minutes earlier.

It was, infact, myself and my eight year old daughter who became trapped in the lift at the Spring Street Car Park, Water Lane. We'd parked on the second floor, and as all the ticket machines, apart from those on the ground floor, were 'Not In Use', we had to leave the car to go down and get a ticket. My daughter wanted to take the lift. We got the ticket, returned into the lift to place the ticket in the car, when we became stuck. The doors simply would not open.
Immediately, my daughter became very upset and frightened, as you can imagine. There are two separate phone numbers to call, should this situation arise, displayed clearly in the lift. The first number I called was a 01270 code. I have to say, the lady on the other end of the phone didn't fill me with a great deal of confidence about our current predicament. However, after only a minute, I received a call on my mobile from 'Pickerings' - the company who services the lifts. The lady from Pickerings, was able to tell me that an engineer was on the way but would take at least 30 minutes. By this time, my daughter was already very frightened, so we all decided it would be quicker to call the emergency services.
The whole thing was over with very quickly really, but my only concern is for other members of the public. If the same thing happened to someone who didn't have a mobile phone, they would struggle to raise awareness of their situation. The alarm button in the lift does not connect you to someone, it is literally a bell to alert someone on the other side of the door. Now, as most people know who use this car park, it isn't very busy and I don't think I have ever seen an attendant in the office. In my opinion, this doesn't seem very safe. Nor is there any sort of reference number displayed in the lift, for Pickerings to pinpoint your location, should you be unfamiliar to the area. I did raise this point to the lady who called me and she assured me it would be looked into.
Luckily, my daughter does not seem to have a lasting fear of lifts from the experience. And when it came to the evening, she finally decided that it was, indeed, an excellent adventure!!
