Conmen target motorists with jewellery scam

Cheshire Police are urging motorists to be vigilant following reports of scams on roads across Cheshire.

Offenders, described as foreign nationals, are flagging drivers down and claiming to have run out of petrol. They then offer the drivers who stop gold jewellery in exchange for cash to buy petrol at a nearby station.

The conmen are believed to be Asian or Eastern European and the 'gold' jewellery subsequently turns out to be worthless trash.

A police spokesperson said "A description of offenders and their vehicle varies, suggesting that a team is working the area, but a silver mercedes features quite prominently.

"Police are keen to identify these people, so if you see them, please phone as soon as possible."

Anyone with any information about these incidents should contact the police on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
