Lorry causes traffic chaos on Altrincham Road

Traffic came to a standstill on the A538 this afternoon as a construction vehicle blocked the road, creating queues all the way back to the motorway junction.

A frustrated driver contacted us at 3.30pm to say he had been stuck in a traffic jam for half an hour on the Altrincham Road as he headed into Wilmslow.

The problem occurred between Waters Corporation's new headquarters and the junction with Mobberley Road where traffic lights and roadworks were already causing delays.

The situation became much worse though when a lorry pulled into the middle of the road, where the traffic was down to a single lane, and stopped to dig at the side of the road.

Bernard Pearce said "There were two contractors vans parked on one side of the road where the traffic lights were. A lorry then pulled out, forcing its way into the traffic between the traffic lights. It just stopped and with an electrical shovel starting digging up stuff at the side of the road with a complete disregard for all the traffic. Once he had filled his lorry he moved on."

Bernard added "It was pretty horrendous, so frustrating and completely unnecessary. The traffic went all the way back to the motorway.

"Is this really what they should be doing at 3.30pm on a Friday afternoon? It was farcical. I called the police in the end."

David,
Funny you should mention that. On Thursday 7th I queued through the runway tunnels for 45+ minutes due to a broken down milk tanker reducing the road to a single lane near the Romper.Having managed to pass to obstruction what did I find, A Highways Patrol car parked up in the farm layby. The driver was clearly oblivious to the chaos 75 yards behind him.The queues must have gone back to Wilmslow by this time.
