On a very cold and wintery night in south Wilmslow our very own Fulshaw WI were preparing for a number of firsts.
The first meeting of the year on Monday 21st January Fulshaw WI played host to Craig McClean MBE, Paralympic Gold medalist in London 2012 and Olympic silver medalist in Sydney 2000.
Such was the excitement of the event that for the first time in the history of this WI we had a small group of men arrive as guests to hear Craig speak. Like all our guests they were welcomed with the same warmth and enthusiasm. It did send a ripple of additional excitement around the room.
Like us all they were keen to meet Craig and listen to his story. Craig talked us through how he got into cycling as a hobby and means of transport and discovering he had a proficiency declared to his family that he wanted to be a professional cyclist. It wasn’t long before he got selected for the British cycling team and the rest is history.
Craig took a lot of questions from our meeting attendees (including the guys) and he then stayed to have tea with us and pose for endless photos. Here he is with our President Hilly Kerr and his medals.
At every meeting the Fulshaw WI treat members and guests to something a little different, where the emphasis is on enjoyment and community spirit. Come along and see whats on offer, our next meeting 18th Feb, see the events listing for details.
