Wilmslow High School pays tribute to 'popular girl' killed in campsite tragedy

Schoolchildren at Wilmslow High School have paid tribute to Hannah Thomas-Jones who tragically died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning whilst camping with her family at the weekend.

Pupils gathered at the school gates this morning to lay flowers, photographs, banners and messages for the 'genuinely popular girl'.

Head teacher Gill Bremner said "Hannah was a Year 9 girl who participated fully in school life. She was in the school hockey team that reached the northern finals and in the under 16s football team which won the Cheshire Cup only last week.

"The school and pupils are obviously in shock, you do not expect to say goodbye when you depart on Friday and come back on Tuesday to find she is not here.

"Hannah was a genuinely popular girl and this morning many of her friends have laid tributes to her at the school.

"Everyone has been very calm and respectful at the school this morning, we have something called the 'Wilmslow Way' which has been very evident today as the pupils have been respectful and caring towards each other.

"We have all sent our sympathies to Hannah's family and we will work with them over the coming weeks to decide how they would like us to commemorate Hannah's time at this school.

"We will also keep all the tributes which have been laid and pass these over to her parents as I am sure, whilst it will be very emotional, they would like to see them."

Hannah's family were all discovered unconscious at the campsite in Bucknell, South Shropshire on Sunday morning. Hannah was pronounced dead at the scene. It is thought she had been poisoned by fumes from a disposable barbecue which had been left in the porch of the tent overnight.

Her parents Phil and Danielle and teenage brother Ben were all quickly rushed to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. Her brother Ben was described yesterday as being stable but still 'unwell', while her parents are in a comfortable condition.

Heartfelt tributes laid at Wilmslow High School read:

"Hannah you will be sadly missed. I love you so much don't ever forget you are one of my best friends and I'll always remember that you will always have a special place in my heart. Fly high beautiful."

"Hannah you are loved by so many people you will be dearly missed, our love and thoughts are with your family."

"The good die young. If tears could build a stairway to heaven we would come and get you back beautiful."

"Hannah we can't believe you're gone; you were such an amazing friend to us, kind, friendly and loyal. You had brains and beauty, you were amazing at sport and you were the best friend a girl could have asked for. Never failed to make us laugh, we would sit and talk about the most random things and have conversations no one else would understand no matter how hard we tried to explain it. You were one in a million, nobody will ever replace you and you'll always have a special place in all of our hearts. Love you so so much, sleep tight."
