Rail travellers at Handforth station may do a double take when they notice a new station nameboard on display in the colours of "Merseyrail".
However Honfordians' fears that the village has been annexed by Liverpool are misplaced – the sign is a gift following a chance conversation between Mike Bishop, Chairman of Friends of Handforth Station, and a senior manager at Merseyrail.
The board was unveiled to station friends young and "mature" with Rotary colleagues alongside the new "Big Society" award plaque from recent Cheshire Best Kept Station awards.
Mike Bishop said "The new name board makes a great addition to our unique collection of 9 boards already donated by rail operators from the British Isles and mainland Europe – we are very grateful to our friends in Merseyside."
Mike Ramsden, Chairman of the Community Activities Committee of the Rotary Club of Handforth Dean, said: "We are delighted to continue our support for the Friends of Handforth Station and are especially thrilled to see that our tending of the station garden contributed to the Big Society award at the recent Cheshire Best Kept Station awards."
