Candidates revealed for Town Council election

An election will be held on Thursday 12th April for one Town Councillor to represent the East Ward on Wilmslow Town Council, following the resignation of Matthew Hodgson in January.

There are two candidates: Adrian Bradley, the Conservative Party candidate, and Dave Cash, an independent candidate.

Adrian Bradley has lived in Wilmslow for almost 30 years, having moved here with his occupation as a Finance Manager with Ford Motor Co.

He told wilmslow.co.uk "I am keen to join Wilmslow Town Council as I believe my experience in local councils will add to the good work already being done by the fledgling council.

"Having served on both Macclesfield Borough and Cheshire County Councils and having built good relationships with many of the existing councillors I will be able to hit the ground running.

"There are many issues ahead of Wilmslow Town Council but all are part of the job. The Local Plan is an important task ahead of us as is working with Conservative controlled Cheshire East Council to agree which roles will be transferred to Wilmslow Town Council and to agree appropriate funding."

Dave Cash has lived in Wilmslow for 39 years since joining ICI at Alderley Park. He is currently semi-retired, following a sales and marketing career in various pharmaceutical companies.

He told wilmslow.co.uk "I am standing for the Wilmslow East vacancy because several residents feel there should be an election, rather than 14 declared Conservative members of Wilmslow Town Council co-opting someone of the same party.

"This is the first time residents of Wilmslow East will have had opportunity to vote for a Councillor. I now have the time to devote to the role and raise an alternative voice. Since Wilmslow Town Council was formed I have attended most full Council and Committee meetings, as a member of the public.

"Wilmslow Town Council will have increasing commitments as Cheshire East Council devolves more responsibilities and costs to them, as evidenced by the need to appoint a part time Town Centre Manager from April. Wilmslow Town Centre needs to encourage a thriving business sector, whilst encouraging more residents with a community focus. More housing etc will be required, but our green spaces and facilities are threatened eg Rectory Fields, Leisure Centre, Library."

He added "Whilst we can complain about what we don't want, residents should tell the local Council what we do want and let them inform us of cost, feasibility and required community involvement. All Wilmslow town councillors have a range of expertise and should have the interest of all residents at heart, as they all live locally."

Papers will begin to be delivered around March 27th and all local residents are urged to use their vote to generate as high a turnout as possible.

Any changes to, or cancellations of, existing postal or proxy vote records, and new applications to be treated as postal voters, must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at Westfields, Middlewich Road, Sandbach, Cheshire, CW11 1HZ, by no later than 5.00pm on Monday 26th March, if they are to be effective for this election.

All new applications for proxy voting arrangements must reach the Electoral Registration Officer, Westfields, Middlewich Road, Sandbach, Cheshire, CW11 1HZ, by no later than 5.00pm on Monday 2nd April, if they are to be effective for this election.

Applications to be treated as proxy voters in the case of medical emergency must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at the fore-mentioned address by 5.00pm on Thursday 12th April, if they are to be effective for this election.

I'd like to know what their views are in respect of the Town Vision 'consultation' especially the prospect of losing Green Belt land to housing development in our ward. This would be an ideal opportunity to send a message to councillors!

Derek, I spent the weekend reading the Vision and attended the manned exhibition today. The Vision is just that and the consultation period has been too short. It has come as a complete suprise to some people without access to the internet or free Express-Advertiser. Wilmslow is short of brownfield building sites but green belt protection is essential around Wilmslow, to prevent urban creep and to protect the local ecology & community. New-build housing could be restricted to Wilmslow workers, to prevent the daily influx, and better use made of available housing by preventing change of use to offices. Indeed, someone suggested today converting some empty office blocks to residential flats. Dean Row residents have managed to organise a meeting with CEC. I hope CEC will have the courtesy to report back the results of the Wilmslow consultation to all residents at a public meeting before incorporating it into their overall report. Some WTC members are on record as expressing their misgivings and I would certainly take a similar view, without wishing to stunt the local economy. Environment & leisure should be the key factor in any development plans. Resident apathy is the biggest risk. The public gallery is often empty at WTC meetings, when questions can be put to the Council on Agenda items.
