Wilmslow Town Council has purchased a Speed Indicator Device (SID) which is being installed around the town to detect and record the speed of approaching vehicles.
The portable sign, which records average and worst speeds on a particular stretch of road, was set up on Dean Row Road on Thursday, 16th February.
PCSO Emma Littlewood said "It is a fantastic way of letting people know how fast they are going."
The SID will be placed on a road for approximately two weeks at a time before it is moved to the next main road. The main focus is on the key roads, primarily in 30mph zones, which Wilmslow Town Council and Cheshire Police have identified as the greatest problem areas for speeding.
Cllr Ruth McNulty, Vice-Chairman of Wilmslow Town Council, said "The Council is concerned that speeding cars represent a potential hazard in urban areas generally. Three quarters of all serious road traffic accidents in the UK, and by 'serious' we mean loss of life or limbs, occur in urban areas. The motor car is the single biggest killer of children between the ages of 8 and 14 in this country and 80% of people hit by a vehicle travelling at 30mph will survive whilst 80% hit at 40mph will die.
"We know, from observation, that cars exceed the speed limit on a number of roads around the town and the installation of our first SID, which will be moved by the police around the 'hot spots' of their suspected speeding violation routes, is our first move to calm traffic speeds in Wilmslow. Our motivation in buying and installing this device is to slow traffic to a safer speed and thus to help protect our residents."
Cllr Jo Milnes, Chair of the Community and Order Committee, added "We hope this device reduces the speed on the main roads. If it has the desired effect the Town Council may purchase more."
