St John's Lindow is hosting two special guests who have both gained public recognition for bold action on the basis of their Christian faith, but in the very contrasting worlds of politics and international sport.
For each evening St John's church rooms will be transformed into a 'jazz café', with live music and bar, for all to enjoy.
Henry Olonga, the youngest and first ever black cricketer for Zimbabwe will be the guest on Friday 24th February. Henry made his test debut as a fast bowler in 1995. He went on to gain international recognition when he wore a black armband to signify the death of democracy under the Mugabe regime, in a World Cup match. It was an act which put his life at risk, forcing him to flee the country he loved. Today he lives in the UK, developing a career as a singer and artist. During the evening Henry will be interviewed and be entertaining with his own songs.
The other guest is Fiona Bruce, Conservative MP for Congleton. She qualified as a solicitor in 1981 and went on to found her own law firm in Warrington in 1988. She decided to give that up in order to stand as a candidate in the 2010 General Election, when she successfully became a Member of Parliament. It is her Christian faith which inspires her to work for the benefit of society and shapes the values that she stands for. She will be interviewed on Saturday 25th February, and the evening will include music from a trio of young jazz musicians.
Rev Simon Gales, vicar of St John's said 'We've had a few evenings like this in the past and they've been good fun. It's always interesting to hear how a person's faith has changed their life. Each evening there's a talk explaining how the Christian faith is also relevant for everyone, so I'd encourage anyone to come along. There's no need to book beforehand -its relaxed and informal."
Each evening begins at 7.30pm, at St John's Church Rooms, Knutsford Road, SK9 6EL.
