Secondary schools in Cheshire East are doing better than ever, after GCSE performance tables were published.

The percentage of pupils achieving five or more A-C GCSEs (or equivalents), including English and Maths, is up two per cent to 64.4%. This also means an improvement of seven per cent over the last three years.

At Wilmslow High School, 70% of pupils achieved 5 or more A* to C grades at GCSE, including English and maths, compared with the England state school average of 58%.

Of these pupils, 79% achieved expected progress at GCSE level in English and 85% achieved expected progress at GCSE level in maths.

Nationally, Cheshire East is ranked second when judged against authorities of a similar size/context and 18th when compared against all councils.

There has also been an increase in the percentage of pupils who make expected progress in English and maths. The figure for English is 74.5% and for maths it is 68.7%.

This is another area that has seen continual improvement over the last three years.

When judged against authorities in the north west, Cheshire East comes fifth for English and third for maths.

Councillor Hilda Gaddum, Cabinet member with responsibility for children and family service, said: "The improvement in performance figures is excellent news and shows that pupils in Cheshire East are doing better than ever.

"I would like to thank the school staff, and teachers, who work very hard with our pupils and also the young people themselves, who are maintaining a high success rate in Cheshire East."
