The legendary singer, Mica Paris has become Patron of the charity Kibera in Need (KIN) which was set up in 2007 to make life better for families in the vast Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya.
The desperate conditions in the vast Kibera slum were highlighted in the UK earlier this year in a Comic Relief documentary. Wilmslow based KIN funds more than 200 Kibera children through school, runs a weekly feeding programme, has made 400 small business loans and provided mattresses, vaccinations, medical support, outings, vocational training and much more.
Mica Paris is a highly respected female singer with a career full of Top 10 hit singles and albums worldwide. She is currently recording a new album of original material featuring renowned guest singers and musicians to be released later in 2011. Most recently Mica has been honoured as an "Icon" at Windsor Castle by the Duke of Edinburgh and will return later this year to perform for his 90th birthday celebrations.
Mica, pledging her support for the work of KIN said, "It is indeed an honour to be a patron of this great cause. Our children are our future. Please join me in reaching out to give these children and their families, living in such desperate conditions, a chance of a better life."
KIN's main fundraiser for 2011 is a Sapphire Ball which will take place at the Hallmark Hotel, Manchester on Saturday 1st October 2011. Mica, who has been described as 'an incredible live performer,' is attending the Ball and will sing a couple of songs. Tickets are £45 each, including dinner and a live band.
KIN founder Estelle Goodwin said, "We are delighted that Mica has agreed to be our Patron and will be coming to the Sapphire Ball. With the support and celebrity kudos Mica now brings to the charity we hope to be able to raise further awareness nationally and internationally for KIN.
"The charitable donation of her time will help our fundraising and also may tempt other key figures in the media and entertainment industry to lend their support to this truly worthwhile cause. We are very grateful for her involvement and I am looking forward to introducing the children of Kibera to her music on my next visit to Nairobi."
