Councillor Wesley Fitzgerald has been re-elected as leader of the Conservative Group on Cheshire East Council at a meeting on Monday, 9th May.

Councillor Wesley Fitzgerald who represents the Wilmslow West and Chorley ward has been a councillor since 1996, having represented the Wilmslow Hough ward for 12 years. In 2004 he became the Leader of Macclesfield Borough Council and in May 2008, when Cheshire East was formed, he was elected to represent Wilmslow South. At the same time he was also elected as the Leader of Cheshire East Council.

The other two candidates in the leadership contest were Councillor Howard Murray, who represents Poynton East and Pott Shrigley, and Councillor Brian Silvester who represents Willaston and Rope. Wesley Fitzgerald was elected in the first round having received over 50% of the vote.

Councillor Roland Domleo, who represents Congleton West, was also re-elected as deputy leader of the Conservative Group.

Councillor Roger West, who represents Poynton West and Adlington and is currently deputy mayor, will be appointed as the new Mayor of Cheshire East later this month and Councillor George Walton, who represents the Chelford ward, will take over as the deputy mayor as a result of John Jones losing his seat in Crewe North to Labour Councillor Mo Grant.

The new Cabinet will be announced following a full Council meeting which will take place on Wednesday, May 18th.
