Colourful 3D mural unveiled

Arty youngsters have unveiled a piece of their handiwork in Wilmslow.

Manchester-based LIME Art has been working with 17 young people on the town's Colshaw Estate to come up with a 3D mural to display in the games area. Commissioned by Cheshire East Council's arts, heritage and museums department, it is the centrepiece of a project to introduce young people to art.

LIME spent a number of weeks on the estate meeting young people and attending youth clubs. They then set up an art club on Wednesday nights which ran for eight weeks. During this time they designed, planned, created, sanded, painted or weaved their own art installation with the letters COLSHAW. The mural was unveiled in all its glory to the estate on Thursday, April 28th.

Clair Edwards-Steele, local engagement officer at Cheshire East, said: "The idea of the project was to introduce young people to art and to build confidence, self-esteem and aspiration in them.

"It has also been a diversionary activity encouraging the young people to be involved in positive activities rather than fall into alcohol and substance misuse or crime on the estate.

"This is a typical example of Cheshire East working together with partners to improve community life."

The workshops, supported by housing association Riverside, took place at the Open Arm Community Projects building on the estate.
