Wilmslow station is seeking volunteers to form a 'Friends' group to play a key role in promoting and caring for this gateway to the town.

Inspired by successful friends groups at Handforth and Styal stations, Northern Rail and Cheshire East Council's Local Area Parternship (LAP) are keen to get a group formed for Wilmslow station.

Rob Sawyer, from Friends of Styal Station, said "Friends groups can make a real difference in improving the ambiance and appearance of stations whilst forging closer links with the local community."

Wilmslow LAP established a station sub-group some time ago, consisting of the LAP Manager Richard Christopherson, Councillor Rod Menlove, Cheshire East Town Centre Manager Diane Smith and representatives from Northern Rail, CycleWilmslow, Living Streets and Wilmslow Trust.

Rob Sawyer, who also a member of Cycle Wilmslow, explained "It was set up to look into improving the station as a gateway to Wilmslow, in terms of appearance, signage, access, cycle parking and links to Wilmslow High School to promote rail travel and good behaviour.

"Incredible Edible are also coming on board and one proposal coming out of the sub-group is to the creation of a Friends Group for the station, similar to Styal and Handforth, so we are keen to gauge interest from the local community in this proposal."

Anyone interested in this proposal can email David Waite, Line Manager for Northern Rail.
