Two arrested following explosion on Beech Lane

Thirty people were evacuated from their homes following an explosion on Beech Lane.

Police were called to a house at 9.31pm on Thursday, 9th March, where residents reported hearing an explosion. They carried out a full search of the premises where a small quantity of chemicals were found.

As a precautionary measure the occupants of 12 adjoining houses were evacuated to Wilmslow Leisure Centre while a full search of the property took place. The residents were able to return to their homes around 2.30am after the scene was declared safe.

Two men who were found at the premises have been arrested on suspicion of arson.

The 44 year old man is currently in hospital, receiving treatment for a wound to the head, whilst the 28 year old male is in custody and continuing to assist police with their enquiries.

A police spokesperson said "The explosion did not cause any significant damage to the property in Beech Lane, or to any adjoining premises."

Stuart Carlon, who lives next door, was at home with his girlfriend when the explosion occurred.

He told me "There was a really loud bang which shook the house at about 9.20pm.

"It was a really obvious explosion, I've never heard anything like it. It blew a hole in the fence.

"We rang the police straight away and they were here within two minutes, along with the firemen and ambulance crew. Then the neighbours all started gathering outside to see what had happened."

Stuart added "There was an earlier bang, about an hour before but it was nowhere near as loud as the second. It sounded more like a close firework."

A small white tent has been erected in the garden and a forensic team returned to the premises at 11.30am.

Police remain at the scene and officers have delivered letters to local residents from Inspector Matt Welsted who said "Although early in the investigation I believe this to be an isolated incident which should not cause anyone any concerns."
