Nativity scene graces Old Road

Local residents are currently building a nativity scene on the bank at Old Road in the hope that it will help raise funds for The Christie.

John Murphy and Carl Gannon started building the scene opposite their house yesterday and are expecting it to be finished by this evening when they plan to light it up and serve mulled wine, chestnuts and mince pies in return for donations to The Christie.

John explained "My brother in law has been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, he is only 37 and has a 6 month old child. We are all devastated. They have found a donor, a 22 year old lady from Germany, but he has been given a 3 in 10 chance of surviving.

'My brother in law is undergoing treatment at The Christie where he is in isolation, he isn't even able to see his baby and he'll miss Christmas. I wanted to raise funds for The Christie but I was never going to run a marathon. The nativity scene will look quite magical when lit up at night time, we are putting some bales of hay out for people to sit on and have music playing. We'll have it there right across the Christmas period and will be serving refreshments in the evenings."

June Bailey, who informed us about the nativity scene, came across it when walking up Old Road this morning. She said "It is gorgeous and demonstrates a huge helping of Community and Christmas Spirit rolled into one.

"They have put a lot of effort in to this wonderful scene and I hope people will support these guys in their quest to raise funds for such a worth while cause."

What a fantastic, thoughful idea to build this nativity for such a worthwhile cause. I will most certainly make a de-tour to visit and make a donation.
Well done John and Carl and I hope your brother-in-law is one of the lucky ones.
