Around 120 pupils at primary schools across Cheshire East, including several Wilmslow schools, are being asked for their ideas on how to reduce their carbon footprint and cut energy bills.

Two Year 5 pupils, aged 9 to 10 years, from Gorsey Bank and Ashdene primary schools have recently been appointed Junior Energy Monitors (JEMs) and they are being asked to encourage their classmates to generate energy-saving ideas.

This could involve switching off lights or computers when they're not being used and any tips on how to keep the school warm during the winter.

The scheme was launched last week at Congleton Town Hall where the JEMs were given talks on what their role will involve, examples of what other schools are doing and a speech by the Mayor of Cheshire East, Councillor Gordon Baxendale.

The event finished with a series of fun activities and games and the presentation of information packs to the monitors.

All pupils are being asked to send in their ideas by email to Michele Burrow at Cheshire East Council before November 19th.

Most of these ideas will feature in the forthcoming JEM newsletter and the best ideas will be presented at the next Cheshire East Council meeting on Thursday, December 16th, at Macclesfield Town Hall as part of Local Democracy Week. The JEMs will be invited to have lunch with the Mayor of Cheshire East before watching councillors discussing their suggestions.

Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: "I am hoping that pupils across Cheshire East can contribute some original ideas to help us reduce our carbon footprint and save money during these tough economic times.

"The best ideas will be discussed at a full council meeting so the monitors can see that their suggestions are being taken seriously."
