Firefighters from Ashton, Hyde, Cheadle and Bury fire stations were called to an incident at the A34 roundabout near Handforth at 11.48am on Monday morning where two bulk containers had fallen from a light goods vehicle.
The Environment Agency were requested to help deal with the incident, as around 1000 litres of alkali had spilled from the containers and entered a nearby brook, which flows in to Micker Brook.
A spokesman from The Environmental Agency said "We carried out tests but the environmental impact of the spillage was minimal. We didn't find any dead fish and only about a 500m stretch of water was affected."
As a result of the incident parts of the A34 were closed which caused extremely heavy traffic congestion in the area - several local residents told us they had been stuck in the traffic jam on the A34 for a couple of hours in the afternoon whilst the clean up operation was carried out.
