Seven-year-old schoolgirl’s fundraising challenge: 50K in 5 countries

Viv, Ruby & Craig

Seven-year-old Ruby McGuire is taking on a fundraising challenge to raise money for The Christie Charity before she emigrates with her family to Colorado, USA.

Ruby lives in Wilmslow wiht her parents Craig and Vivienne and her older brother, Jack (aged 9). She is in Year 2 at Lindow Primary School in Wilmslow.

Louise Dawson, Community Fundraising Officer at The Christie Charity came into Lindow Community primary school to talk to Ruby's class about The Christie Charity, which struck a chord with the young pupil.

Ruby decided she would like to do a challenge to raise money for a good cause and help others less fortunate than her. That's when she and her family came up with 'a 50k in 5 countries before Colorado' challenge!

Ruby's dad, Craig said, "We are currently spending the weekend with our family in Scotland, ahead of running in our 5th country when we visit Viv's family in Killarney, Ireland.

"Ruby wanted to complete a challenge before America and she immediately said that she wanted to do it for The Christie Charity because of the school visit. Plus, we have friends who have been cared for at the Christie.

"We are moving to Boulder, Colorado for my work. Jack and Ruby are excited about starting their new school in 6 weeks' time.

"In Ruby's own words, she picked the Christie, 'Because I know how people are suffering from cancer and The Christie is one of the best places. It helps kids and grown-ups'."

Ruby has already run in Greece and England. She and her family recently ran in Wales and will be visiting (and running in) Scotland and Ireland before they leave for Colorado.

This is the final week, and Ruby has completed 43k so far. The family go to Ireland today for the final country in the challenge before Ruby and her family fly to the USA this weekend!
