With the 80th anniversary of VE Day, Victory in Europe, approaching Wilmslow Historical Society is asking local residents to share their family memories.

In order to celebrate this important event on 8th May Wilmslow Historical Society is asking residents to contact them if they have any family memories or photographs of Wilmslow from this period .They are looking for material and more stories to tell and ideas how best to make the occasion.

Councillor Jon Kelly, Wilmslow History Tours organiser said "Wilmslow people served in every service and theatre in World War Two and on the home front. There are some truly amazing stories to tell of their deeds and exploits from the Battle of Britain to Burma.

"On the home front V1 bombs flew overhead and bombs fell in Water Lane and on Macclesfield Road. Voices from all over the World could be heard in Wilmslow's streets, cinemas and pubs"

He added "A newspaper of the time reports "Wilmslow's Victory in Europe bonfire was lighted in The Carrs and it illuminated the sky brilliantly. Popular songs were taken up by sections of the crowd, and there was a continual coming and going until after midnight."

If you have material of stories to tell, please contact Jon on [email protected] or on 01625 250881.
