Wilmslow's Repair Café, similar to the TV programme Repair Shop has been helping people to make things last longer and save money since their first event was held in October 2019.
Organised by Transition Wilmslow, volunteers offer repairs for small electrical, wooden, clothing and jewellery items as well as bikes and estimate they saved 6.15 tonnes of CO from landfill during past three years.
Organisers have released stats for the last 3 years:
- In 2022, we had 43 completed repairs and saved an estimated 1.75 tonnes of CO₂ by completing these repairs rather than the items going to landfill.
- In 2023, we had 125 completed repairs and saved an estimated 2.9 tonnes of CO₂ by completing these repairs rather than the items going to landfill.
- In 2024, we had 84 completed repairs and saved an estimated 1.5 tonnes of CO₂ by completing these repairs rather than the items going to landfill.
Ken Wallace, the Transition Wilmslow repair café organiser, said, "We were delighted to see so many people attending our Repair Cafés last year, taking a little time to have their existing belongings mended, instead of buying new. And we now know how many tonnes CO₂ we have saved too, it's a great feeling to be helping members of our community, as well as reducing our impact on the planet. We can't wait to do more of the same in 2025. So don't throw away your items - bring them to us."
Three repair cafes are already lined up for 2025, the next one will be 1st March at Wilmslow URC). Repairs and refreshments are free, though organisers are grateful for donations to support venue hire and insurance.
