Following a year full of environmental projects, The Ryleys School has been awarded the Eco Schools Green Flag Award, for the third time. And the team did such a fantastic and thorough job, that they were presented with a 'distinction' again, one of only a small group of schools in the country to receive this level.

Throughout the year the Eco Warriors, from age 4-11, attended litter picks within the school grounds and alongside The Friends of The Carrs by the River Bollin to prevent it washing out to sea. They also sponsored three endangered ocean animals, a black tip shark, a polar bear and a leatherback turtle.

More locally, they built habitats for hedgehogs, small mammals, birds, frogs, newts and planted large areas to support insects life.

Part of the review the school received from the Keep Britain Tidy Eco Schools examiners stated, "Your greatest success is a brilliant achievement: Creating different areas for biodiversity around your school grounds has been a huge success! It's clearly something that pupils will be proud of and leaves a great legacy to build upon!

"Your Eco Committee has achieved amazing things this year, embedding positive behaviours and championing sustainability. You are an inspiration to your school and local community and we're honoured to call you an 'Eco School!' Thank you for all your environment efforts."

Alongside all of these projects there has been a real determined effort to reduce food waste within school, from simple changes like trying to finish or plates, waiting before choosing a second helping, creative menu choices and composting.

Headteacher, Mrs Langford, closed the proud announcement during assembly by saying, "Well done to everyone involved. It's a great success to reflect a year's hard work from the Eco Team and to get a distinction for our third year running is really great news. We look forward to flying the flag and further building on our Eco activities next year."
