As many residents will recall, acoustic cameras were installed on the A34 Pendleton Way towards the end of October last year.

It has now been confirmed that the initial three month trial period will be extended by a further three months.

Over the course of the initial trial period, from 1st November 2022 to 31st January 2023, there were 239 activations of the camera - including four repeat offences within the first month.

Councillor Craig Browne explained "Following the extension of the trial Cheshire East Highways, working with statutory partners in the Multi-Agency Action Group (including Cheshire Police) will need to give consideration to the making of a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO).

"A PSPO would enable fines to be issued: up to £100 for a first offence."

The noise-activated cameras, which were purchased and installed as a joint venture between the Police & Crime Commissioner and Cheshire East Highways to crack down on noisy anti-social motorists. Placed on a roundabout approach on the A34 Pendleton Way, between Wilmslow and Alderley Edge, they are monitored, virtually, by Cheshire Police.

So to clarify.. in 3 months hundreds of thousands of vehicles have passed , commuting / travelling on this major road with no issue, yet only 239 activations ( a minute percentage) Yet NO prosecutions / enforcement, and it now needs to be made subject to a 'Public Space Protection Order ' before any fixed penalty notices can be issued?
Is this proportionate ?? How much is this costing ?? How much will the next stage cost to enforce ??... Council Tax increase is bad enough but please dont waste any more tax dollars on this, Is it the best way to spend taxes in light of increased energy cost and more ? its clearly neither proportionate or justified, and ultimately needs the local constabulary to enforce in any event.. so as was mentioned on the many threads when this started ..use conventional focussed enforcement to resolve if its such a major problem. This is achieving nothing.

It is worth noting that these cameras were installed in response to the public concerns over the gatherings of noisy cars in Wilmslow and Alderley Edge and the roads linking the two communities.
They were never intended to be a revenue generator. The aim was to stop the dangerous driving and the unacceptable levels of noise.
If the incidence of fines is low, then the deterrence is working.
Seems like a success to me.
