Following a year of environmental endeavours, the school has been awarded the Eco Schools Green Flag Award and the team did such a fantastic and thorough job, that they were presented with a 'distinction' one of only a few in the country to receive this.
To achieve this accolade, the children met once a week to plan or execute a number of projects throughout the year. The children built a nature pond in the school grounds, with advice from Lindow Common Advisory Group and in turn visited Black Lake in Wilmslow, to see the potential wildlife that open water can offer. The school pond, although a great deal smaller, has already an abundance of wildlife teaming into and around it.
Throughout the year the Eco Warriors, from age 4-11, attended litter picks within the school grounds and alongside The Friends of The Carrs by the River Bollin to prevent littering of the land, or it washing out to sea. They also raised £402 for the Ocean charity Team Seas.
The keen green team worked several times with Alderley Edge in Bloom to plant bulbs, plant at Waitrose front alongside other local schools and supported the opening of the library at the Station with book donations.
The review the school received from the Keep Britain Tidy Eco Schools examiners stated, "Your work is a great example of the collaborative approach we will all need to adopt to combat pollution in the environment - your application made us feel really positive for the future."
Alongside all of these projects there has been a real determined effort to reduce the energy used within school, from simple changes like turning off lights, or using the cold, not hot, tap to wash hands, up to replacing a number of older equipment with far more efficient models. The old equipment was of course disposed of sensibly to a company who reuse or re-purpose parts!
Headteacher, Mrs Langford, closed the proud announcement during assembly by saying, "Well done to everyone involved. We look forward to sharing our success, flying the flag and further improving our Eco activities next year."
