Young and old come together to get litter off the streets

Local residents of all ages turned out in force in Handforth on Saturday, 12th March, to help rid the village of litter.

Over 60 people, ranging from 3 year olds to 65 year olds, took part in a community litter pick, collecting over 50 bags of rubbish from the village centre, Spath Lane Estate, Meriton Road Park and the Lakes Estate.

Councillor Julie Smith said "Handforth Town Council organise them and provide all the equipment. We've had to increase the amount of equipment three times since we started just before lockdown and we ran out again this time. A good problem to have!"

She added "The children get so excited about it and there was an element of competition around who can find the most. Our local cubs came out to help this time too and the children were all rewarded with sweets, ice cream or drinks for their hard work."

Organisers are intending to make this a regular event and hope that even more people will join them next time.

This was great to see. The enthusiasm amongst the younger litter pickers was great. Well done Julie, you’ll need more bags next time
