Sending Shockwaves across Alderley

Promotional Feature

Here at Alderley Edge Foot Clinic, we specialise in the lower limb, so after in-depth research we bring you another innovative treatment, Extra-Corporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

When you have pain that stops you doing your everyday activities from walking, running or even gardening. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment, alternative to surgery, steroidal injections and oral medication.

This device is used to pass acoustic shockwaves through the skin to the affected area, it can be utilised in the treatment of tendon pathology. Many years of research have confirmed that pathological alterations of tendons, ligaments, capsules, muscles and bones – in other words the root causes of pain – can be eliminated systematically with this innovative therapy approach. It is a highly effective procedure to treat pain and restore full mobility with minimal risks or side effects. The shockwaves stimulate the body's own healing mechanisms to facilitate the repair of the damaged tendon.

At Alderley Edge foot clinic we can assess you in a consultation to confirm the diagnosis and for your suitability for the treatment. A course of treatment can be from three to five weeks depending on severity of your condition, plus exercises. The effects of the treatment seem to increase over time and the outcome is assessed at 6 weeks after the last treatment.

What can be treated with ESWT?

· Achilles Tendonitis / Achilles Tendinopathy

· Plantar fasciitis/heel spur

· Metatarsalgia

· Plantar foot muscles

· Tibial stress syndrome

· Calf muscle shortening

· Patellar tendinitis

· Thigh adductors

· Shortened thigh muscles.

How is the treatment performed?

A skin gel is applied to the treatment area to allow the shock waves to be introduced into the body almost painlessly and without any loss of energy. Shock waves are then applied as the shock wave applicator is moved over the pain region in a circular motion.

Each therapy session takes between 5 and 10 minutes depending on the condition being treated. In general, 3 to 5 treatments are necessary at weekly intervals. After only 1 to 2 sessions, over 80% of patients have reported complete pain relief or significant pain reduction.

We've nailed it.

As things are looking brighter and summer is just around the corner, plans are being made and soon it will be time to get your toes out. We would like to introduce a new nail procedure PEDISAFE, this is an enhancing remodelling and bespoke prosthetic nail. This can make your toenail look as good as new, no matter what condition they are in. A polymer gel is applied in layers to your nail bed to recreate the appearance of a nail. The gel has great flexibility which allows it to with stand stresses your feet go through daily. The flexibility also allows the gel to grow with the natural nail plate, causing less trauma than acrylic based products. In addition, there is no trauma caused to the nail plate or nail bed. If your toenail has been damaged, injured, thickened, if it is in-growing, or even been removed, Pedisafe can be used.

Nail conditions

Thickened nail known as onychoxsis is a uniformed thickened nail. Thick horny like nails are caused through damage by banging, stubbing, dropping something on it or pressure from shoes. With Pedisafe we can reduce the thickness, unevenness and make the nail flat and more aesthetically pleasing.

Psoriatic nail

If you have psoriasis, the nails become thinner, dryer, brittle and weak with ridges and sometimes are uneven. With Pedisafe we can straighten out those ridges and make the nail smooth.

Fungal discolours the nail making it look white, yellow, brown or black, it can be dry, chalky or spongy and can smell. We can only use Pedisafe in conjunction with the Lacuna nail fenestration method which is a fungal treatment. We can remove the superficial dead fungal nail, then add Pedisafe to make your nail look normal in shape and colour, so a topical fungal treatment can be applied.

It is recommended that the bespoke prosthetic nail be replaced six to eight weeks as the nail grows it will lift.
