Alderley District’s 1st Handforth pack have proved themselves to be the county’s `craftiest’ Cubs. Their team of six boys and girls won the County Handicraft trophy in a competition held in Widnes.
The competition was also a real learning experience for the teams taking part who all had to make items for their own ShelterBox – using that charity’s emergency relief materials as examples. ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide.
“It was very difficult to choose a winning team, but Alderley’s representatives, 1st Handforth, did such a good job making the items for their box, and getting so much in it, that they deserved to be named as winners,” said Cubs’ Assistant County Commissioner Cathy Bland.
A typical ShelterBox contains mosquito nets, collapsible water containers and water purifying equipment, stove and cooking equipment, custom-designed ten-person tent, waterproof ponchos, waterproof groundmats, children's activity pack, thermal fleece blankets and a toolkit. So far almost 68,000 ShelterBoxes have been shipped to countries in need of emergency aid including Chile and Haiti.
