A pupil from Lindow Primary School became a firefighter for the afternoon after he won a poster competition organised by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.

11-year- old Angus Macleod beat stiff competition with his winning poster and was given a VIP invitation, along with his classmates, to visit Wilmslow Fire Station on Friday, February 26.

Both Angus and his classmates were given a tour of the Station by Watch Manager Neil Brookes and Firefighter Rob Martin, before Angus became the "Officer in Charge" for a mock search and rescue exercise, wearing fire kit usually worn by cadets.

To add spice to the exercise Angus picked two boys from his class and the confident trio challenged a team of three girls to a race to reach an imitation baby. On this occasion the boys were victorious but the exercise was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants

The Service received over 200 entries to its colouring competition, which was based on the theme 'How do you keep your family safe from fire? Children were able to enter individually or via their school for one of the three categories which were Category 1 (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2); Category 2 (Year 3 and Year 4) and category 3 (Year 5 and Year 6).

Tim Bevington, Head of Corporate Communications for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "The colouring competition proved to be very successful with some great posters being submitted by pupils from all ages.

"One of the main things the judges were looking for was a clear fire safety message and good colourful graphics and Angus's poster had both these elements.

"His poster was chosen out of hundreds in his category and I would like to thank everyone who entered our competition and for making it a great success."

Before leaving Angus and his friends had a go at squirting water from the hose reels on the appliance. He was then presented with a framed certificate by Watch Manager Brookes and the class and Angus were given fire safety goodie bags to take home.
