Deputy Leader steps down from Cabinet

Cllr David Brown

Cheshire East Council has confirmed that their Deputy Leader Cllr David Brown has chosen to stand aside from his cabinet duties for the time being.

His decision to stand down as Portfolio Holder was for Transport and infrastructure, came after yesterday's confirmation that Cheshire Constabulary is looking into concerns about the Council's allocation of public funds in making a £70,000 grant to Berkeley Academy in Wistaston for a car park.

Leader of the Council Cllr Rachel Bailey said "I understand and respect Cllr Brown's decision to stand aside today. I will work closely with his cabinet deputy, Cllr Glen Williams to ensure that the work continues following the lead Cllr Brown has shown in taking forward the important work on the A500 consultation and Crewe Green link road, without delay or distraction."

Cllr Brown remains a councillor for Congleton East, and as Deputy Leader of the Council.

How Strange ? David Brown now doing a ‘Michael Jones’, stepping aside from whatever’s coming hurtling down the tracks.. But not actually falling on his sword !! .. ( Lyme Green all over again !!) The recent additional catalogue of catastrophes increases by the day… How interesting Cheshire West do not have these same problems from their elected representatives…. Whilst Michael Jones has identified that if suspended by the Tory group it would .. “ Free me to speak openly about issues I think are MORALLY WRONG in the council “ .. (& I don’t know if that would MORALLY include his admissions about awarding Tax payers money to ‘Core-fit ‘ contracts ( £160k? ) with his personal physiotherapist Amanda Weston or their respective joint preparatory action with others to now develop the MMU Campus at Crewe into a private enterprise… So whilst he is posed with HIS finger on the trigger .. I wonder if David Brown is similarly poised with a twitch Trigger finger also ?... Truth will out !. Our new MP E=McV must be thoroughly impressed with this bunch ! … The Localism Act was invoked to ensure cllrs hold the highest ethical standards. I suggest with the exception of the good hard working people at CEC with their nose to the grind every day who actually provide the services and support for residents, that those at the helm, have demonstrated their moral and ethical compass to be navigating a course onto the rocks at significant cost to CEC residents, and workers. Is it any wonder there is a call to place them into ‘Special measures’. The obvious solution would be to allow CWC to take control immediately.

I read elsewhere that Both Esther McVey MP and Laura Smith MP have written to Secretary of State Sajid Javid calling on Government to urgently investigate CE Councils handling of a number of affairs.

The plot thickens!

I think Nick Jones makes an excellent point: we don't hear the same disturbing stories from Cheshire West.

It is worry to know that despite the bad publicity that surrounded Lyme Green which led to all the senior officers of the council going we have had a series of subsequent scandals. The time has come for the Local Government secretary not only to look at specific issues at the council but to undertake a complete review of how the authority functions.

@ Alan ; I wonder therefore if E=McV shares Rachel Baileys concern being “disappointed yet again at the negative portrayal of CEC for no good cause”

I wont list them... haven't got time..!

But with 2 MP's from opposite side of the fence 'doing the right thing' clearly demonstrate this isn't just a party issue...our CEC incumbents are clearly out of step with common sense and the electorates expectation of their conduct in public office...

For some reason I have the words of ABBA ringing in my ears: "The history book on the shelf is always repeating itself"

Perhaps he's been inspired by the two-step(down) on Strictly?

@ Pete Taylor,

Didn't Abba also have hits with "S.O.S." and "Gimmee,Gimmee, Gimmee?"
