Severe weather causes road closures

Cheshire East have announced that gritting the essential routes will remain a priority over the coming days. Priority 1 Routes (A roads and designated routes to A & E hospitals) will continue to be salted as the freezing temperatures and icy conditions are expected to continue for the next few days.

Drifting snow has resulted in the closure of the A54, between Bosley and Buxton, and the A537 between Macclesfield and Buxton - both roads are expected to remain closed for some time.

Over 700 tonnes of salt have been delivered to the area this week with additional deliveries expected over the New Year period. However Cheshire East are warning drivers to be extra cautious because salt becomes less effective when temperatures drop below -5 degrees C.

According to the council's latest statement "The salting of footways can only be carried out when it is decided resources are no longer needed to attend to priority routes. Unfortunately, not all footways, estate roads and residential streets can be treated as the Authority’s attention must be on ensuring major routes across Cheshire East and roads surrounding A and E hospitals are kept open."

With severe weather expected in parts of Cheshire East over the next 24 hours the latest update from Cheshire East states;

" The Council's gritters, sub contractors and even local farmers are working around the clock to keep clear all major routes and, where possible, some secondary routes."
