Local ramblers are stepping up their programme of walks in the New Year with more than 150 weekend and midweek outings to scenic locations, plus summer evening walks and social activities.

East Cheshire Ramblers which was formed 36 years ago now boasts a membership of nearly 800, making it one of the largest walking groups nationwide.

Chairman Sandra Edwards said that “whereas Rambler’s Association membership had declined nationally, it was pleasing to report that the group's numbers had increased thanks to a concerted publicity campaign that had included a special series of walks for the Bollington Festival and a travelling exhibition of  members' photographs which was now touring local libraries and other public venues.”

“Walking is an excellent way of keeping healthy as well as a pleasurable and sociable way to make new friends and keep in touch,“ she added.

Footpaths secretary Neil Collie reported that over 400 miles of public footpaths, in 33 East Cheshire parishes, had been walked by the group's voluntary inspectors for the 2009 annual survey which showed that 88% of paths could be used without difficulty. Around 50, which were found to be obstructed or blocked altogether, were reported to Cheshire East council.
