Cheshire East Council have been presented with an award for innovative practice at three landfill sites including Wilmslow.

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management awards for Environmental Excellence (CIWM) presented Cheshire East Council with the award for winning the Innovative Practice in Waste Management and Resource Recovery section.

It follows the installation of new gas extraction equipment at Wilmslow, Alsager, and Brownlow. The new gas extraction system contains specialist equipment designed to trap the small amounts of methane gas which were being released almost continually into the atmosphere.

Cheshire East Councillor David Brickhill, Cabinet member with responsibility for the Environment said “I am very pleased indeed to receive this recognition from the CIWM for the valuable work carried out by our expert staff to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

“Reducing the amount of methane gas released into our atmosphere must remain a top priority if we are to properly protect are environment for the benefit of future generations.”
