Gritting operation focused on principal routes

The snow seems to have passed, at least according to the current weather forecast, but with temperatures predicted to remain well below freezing for the rest of the week Cheshire East have announced that all available resources are dealing with the effects of severe weather conditions.

Gritting began across Cheshire East on Friday; the main routes have now been treated seven times and over 6000 miles of roads have been covered using over 1000 tonnes of salt.

A further 10 drivers were trained for gritting operations prior to the winter season and according to the council all available vehicles are in operation at the current time. Gritting is taking place on a priority basis with all A and B routes treated first and all other routes being treated if snow or ice is likely to remain for a period 24 hours.

We have also been informed that between 7 and 14 teams are in the process of treating the pavements and Cheshire East Council is expecting a delivery of a further 750 tonnes of salt over the next 48 hours.

Cheshire East Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet support member with responsibility for the Environment said: “ I am confident our Highways service are doing all they can to clear our roads during these severe weather conditions. In addition to this, we are focusing on footpaths to ensure the safety of pedestrians at this time.”

In some areas, specialised recycling vehicles are having difficulty making collections due to compacted snow but they will continue to attempt to empty these bins over the next few days.
