The Dogfather: Thanks to all those dogs

I received a wonderful Christmas card today from the owner of Rory, a dog who transformed over the year from an aggressive unstable terrier to a balanced family pet. It's a happy ending to a story that started on Death Row. Rory was due to be euthanized the week we met. I was his 'last chance.' He came with a bad reputation for aggression and a long list of offences.

It was clear from his manic behaviour Rory was used to excitement and chaos and had never experienced the joy of walking quietly with another dog. Once I had him on a relaxed lead I introduced him to Tally my experienced yellow Lab and we walked along together in perfect silence.

That was the breakthrough we needed. From thereon his rehabilitation was simply a matter of time and patience. It was a small job for me but, given his previous experience, an enormous act of faith from Rory.

So, as we head towards Christmas I'd like to thank all those dogs who trusted me to help them with their issues. For Border Collie Annie, who was agoraphobic, it meant crossing busy roads over and over again. Bulldog Titan had to meet lots of other dogs until he understood they were not all out to hurt him. Jasper was scared of his own shadow and Molly hated people.

One by one we faced down their fears which required great courage and trust from these dogs. The only way to defeat fear is to face it and together we did just that.

So a massive thanks to Barney, Topaz. Rory, Little Jack and all those other brave dogs who made the journey with me. Love to Tally, Murphy and all my Pack for their unflagging dedication. You will always be in my heart.

And to all dogs everywhere I send my undying respect.

Happy Christmas.
