East Cheshire Police will be using marked and unmarked cars, as well as motorcycles this Christmas to patrol and carry out special high profile road checks.
Any driver involved in a collision, caught committing an offence or suspected of drinking will be stopped and breathalysed, irrespective of the time of day.
Police Officers will also be carrying out morning road checks in the neighbourhood because each year a significant number of driver’s get up after a night’s drinking and think they are fine, when in fact they are still over the legal limit and unfit to drive.
P.C. Paul Burke, from the Roads Policing Unit of Cheshire Police Eastern Area said, “Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive. There is no foolproof way of drinking and staying under the limit, or of knowing how much you can drink and still drive safely. The message is clear- it’s ‘None for the Road’.
P.C. Paul Burke also said, “People need to think what that next round might cost. Drink driving can ruin your life. Even if you are not killed or injured it could mean a court conviction, a driving ban of at least twelve months, an endorsement of your driving licence for eleven years -and a criminal record!”
An extensive advertising campaign, including a series of local radio adverts, will run from December 9th to December 18th to drive home the “None for the Road” message in East Cheshire.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service will also be spreading the same message in nominated pubs by promoting a scheme which provides designated drivers with free soft drinks.
