As part of their winter season of monthly talks, the Wilmslow Trust are hosting a meeting this Thursday with Councillor Rod Menlove to discuss "Our New Local Government."
Cheshire East Councillor for Wilmslow South, Rod Menlove, who has been a driving force in the campaign for Wilmslow and Handforth to have a dedicated Town Council, will be explaining what has been happening at Cheshire East, and considering the opportunities that a Town Council can offer Wilmslow.
According to Peter Stubbs, from the Wilmslow Trust; “Councillor Menlove has been a member of Cheshire East County Council at Sandbach since its establishment last year. He serves on the Governance and Constitution Committee, and the Environment Committee. He is also chairman of the Wilmslow Forum which has involved him closely in the petition and campaign for a Town Council for Wilmslow and Handforth, so he is uniquely placed to explain the developing pattern of local government in Wilmslow.”
In the late summer months the Wilmslow Trust and Wilmslow Forum ran a petition in support of a Town Council for Wilmslow which generated over 2,800 signatories. This was comfortably more than the requisite 10% of electorate’s signatures. The petition was submitted to Cheshire East who we understand have now opted to proceed to a full referendum of the electorate, probably next summer.
Peter told us “Our impression whilst canvassing was that over 90% of people we talked to wanted a Town Council, the referendum will give every greater Wilmslow voter the chance to say whether they want a Town Council or not.”
Non-members are very welcome to attend this week’s talk and learn more about what a Town Council will mean for Wilmslow. The meeting will be held at the Wilmslow Guild on Bourne Street at 7.30pm on Thursday 26th November.
