Singers celebrate 80th birthdays with donations to Handforth charity

Two members of a community singing group celebrated their 80th birthday's this summer by raising more than £1,300 for charity.

Instead of receiving presents, Oakmere Singers Audrey Stephenson and Shirley Worth asked family and friends for charitable donations and raised £800 and £500 respectively for The Handforth Community War Memorial Foundation.

Other members of the group have committed to make donations to The War Memorial Fund but have not yet had their birthdays.

Oakmere Singers consists of 18 members including some residents at Oakmere retirement complex on Spath Lane and some residents from the Handforth Area. They range in age from 68 to 90 years old and have been singing in Wilmslow, Handforth and the surrounding area for the last 3 years raising funds for local charities.

Ex-Manchester DJ and Secretary of The Oakmere Singers Association, Leo Shorrock said "We perform solely for fun and pleasure and have gained a formidable reputation for putting on professional yet light-hearted shows which appeal to all age groups.

"All fees, donations and proceeds from our concerts are donated to local Handforth charities. Everyone in the group gets a lot of satisfaction from our singing. We all look forward to our concerts at the different venues.

The type of feedback we get, at a recent concert family members of their mother suffering from dementia were so happy as their mother has not spoken very much over the last 12 months, yet she sang every song that we performed at that concert. They were in tears and could not thank us enough at the end of the show. All the singers felt deeply moved by their comments, and this is what we find at all our venues. We consider it a privilege to bring so much enjoyment to so many."

In addition to Audrey Shirley's recent donation to The Handforth Community War Memorial Foundation Oakmere Singers have donated £50 to The Alzheimer's Society and they held a concert at Oakmere on St Georges Day which raised over £400.00 for The Handforth Community War Memorial Foundation.
