£7m upgrade for street lighting

Funding has been secured for major improvements to the Borough's street lights.

More than £7m will be invested during 2015 and 2016 to upgrade over 11,000 street lights using the latest light-emitting diode (LED) technology. Nearly 2,500 columns that have reached the end of their serviceable life will also be replaced,

The money is coming from Salix Finance, which works with public sector organisations to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions. Salix provides interest-free loans with repayments covered from the energy savings achieved by the project.

Paul Traynor, strategic commissioning manager for highways at Cheshire East Council, said: "The Council has a duty to look at all options to reduce its carbon emissions and to tackle increasing energy costs.

"Upgrading existing lanterns to LED will not only reduce our carbon emissions but will also deliver a better quality of light for residents, cut ongoing maintenance costs and significantly reduce our energy bills."

Is there an election that they have just released this? They began upgrading street lighting at the end of 2014. I know this because that is when they took away many of the street lights on Wilmslow Park Road. They put in the new street lights about a month ago. It meant that throughout the winter months children were going to school, and coming home from school in the dark along the narrow footpath! Dangerous or what?

Sort the roads out first, it's like a third world country driving in East Cheshire

Oh, come on...the roads aren't all that great in places, but "third world"?

A lamp standard in Woodlands Road Handforth was knocked down by a mechanical digger in 2013 and replaced with a new one. Only one snag - about 18 months later it hasn't yet been connected to the electricity supply. Are they awaiting the erection of a windmill to generate the power in an effort to go green?

Borrow the money, upgrade the lighting... switch it off to save money?
