During a recent holiday I was persuaded to take a camel ride against my better judgement.
Imagine my surprise when I saw a train of over 200 beasts lying in lines of 50 awaiting our arrival. Despite their close proximity there was no biting or kicking just a huge group of relaxed animals quietly awaiting their call to duty.
We climbed aboard and the drover urged the camels to their feet setting off along the narrow mountain path in a long train. It was all incredibly orderly and I marvelled at the quiet way this large herd worked in such harmony. I couldn't help comparing them to the dogs I see on a daily basis misbehaving, lunging at others and creating such stress for their owners.
In discussion with one of the English-speaking drovers the answer became obvious. All the camels belong to individual drovers who typically own a string of 20.
Each drover leads his camels up the mountain from a nearby village at dawn. They work as a team throughout the day when they are led back down to the village for food water and rest.
These animals have leadership, exercise, care and (most importantly) purpose. In short they have a predictable and fulfilling lifestyle. The drovers set the rules and apply them consistently. There is no uncertainty every camel knows what's expected of him/her.
You will find the same result with working dogs who rarely indulge in the unruly behaviour seen in many 'pet' dogs but this fulfilling lifestyle can be easily created for any dog.
My number one tool in rehabilitating troubled and/or aggressive dogs is giving the dog a job. It's a major factor in redirecting unwanted behaviour. I've seen dozens of difficult dogs change completely once given a purpose.
